    Sumit Mondal

Sumit Mondal is a PhD research scholar in the Centre for Theatre and Performance Studies, School of Arts and Aesthetics at Jawaharlal Nehru University. His primary research interest lies in the progression of Proscenium theatre post independence in India. Apart from his primary research interest, he also pays attention to post-colonial dramaturgy, retelling, orality, and Translation/Transmediation in theatre.

Mr. Mondal has two significant publications related to contemporary theatre in Bengal. One of his papers, titled "Reclaiming Public Spaces in Post-Pandemic (Kolkata): Activist Theatre, Gender, and the Resurgence of the Marginal," is co-authored by him and was published in Theatre Research International on Cambridge Core by Cambridge University Press in 2024. His recent article, "Theatre as a Weapon Against Fascism: A Case Study of Two Bengali Plays, Mephisto and Barricade," further contributes to his academic profile. He has also presented several papers at various conferences, provoking new discussions in cultural studies, theatre research, and performance theories, particularly within the context of South Asia. His PhD thesis investigates the 'political' re-imagination of theatre performances in contemporary Kolkata, especially within the urban group theatre circuit. The work highlights aspects of dramaturgy, scenography, performances, and spectatorship while contextualizing the current political landscape and examining the relationship between theatre, the circulation of political content and form, and its role in fostering a collective political response. Additionally, Mr. Mondal is interested in the connections between 'text,' performances, and their historical context in adaptation and revival work in theatre, alongside contemporary literary and theatrical works. His Ph.D thesis explores the 'political' re-imagination of theatre performances in contemporary Kolkata, mainly in the circuit of urban group theatre. The work pinpoints the aspects of dramaturgy, scenography, performances, and spectatorship, contextualizing the current political scenario and the relation between theatre, its circulation of political content and form, and its
relevance in co-creating a collective political response. However, Mr. Mondal's interest also lies in the relation between 'text', performances, and their historicity in adaptation and 'revival' work in theatre, besides contemporary literary and theatre works.
