Kartik Tripathi
My name is Kartik Tripathi, and I belong to Kopaganj Village in the Mau district of Uttar Pradesh. I am currently pursuing a Ph.D. in the Visual Studies Department, School of Arts & Aesthetics, JNU. My Ph.D. research focuses on Varanasi’s religious visual culture. Specifically, I am working on a comparative study of the high and popular cultures of the city. I am also interested in folk culture, folk songs, mythologies, folk worship, and related subjects.
I completed my M.Phil. from the same School, working on Varanasi’s temple murals from the 19th–20th centuries. I hold B.F.A. and M.F.A. degrees in Painting from the Visual Arts Department, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi. I am also a practicing artist, working in several mediums, including acrylic on canvas, charcoal on paper, and digital media. In addition, I am a photographer and have documented many rituals, festivals, and daily life scenes of Banaras. I have also made a documentary in my village on the worship of folk deities, titled Teensalla, which is available on YouTube.
