    Abstract

Shakespeare criticism since the late twentieth century has veered away from arriving at a final determinate meaning and highlighted important issues of present times such as gender, power and patriarchy. Other departments and disciplines have also found in Shakespeare much to learn. In this context, it is worthwhile to interact with Shakespeare’s King Lear at a time when the present time is deeply concerned with finding the right ways for the parents to deal with the child. My reading is further enriched as the father-child relation in King Lear is compared to the father-son relation described in Canto 7 of Bhagavata Purana and the mother-son relation between Karna and Kunti in Mahabharata as well as in Tagore’s Karna-Kunti Sa.nbaad.
