    Abstract:

There is always a quest for ways to foresee, to save the earth from the catastrophe to which it is feared to be heading fast. The increasing incidents of environmental disasters like unpredictable climatic changes, earthquakes, wild fires etc.… have made eco -degeneration a felt reality to every man. The end-of-the-world motif, needless to say, has also been a persistent preoccupation in various literary works.

The advancement of technology promoted ego-centrism and led to the erosion of humane values cherished by the ancestral cultures. The respect and concern for nature and the other species on the earth integral to many traditional cultures declined as selfishness rule the entire humanity. Man has reached a stage where one is at the verge of an active volcano which can erupt at any time. The challenge before the humanity is to retain its achievements, particularly in the field of science and technology, and get ahead with its development agenda without destroying the nature.

This article is an enquiry based on the various concepts of the ecological discourse and making use of the modes and devices of critical analysis suggested by eco-criticism in George Stewart’s Earth Abides. Thus the present study invites man to descend from the height to which he has elevated himself as the master of the entire universe and establish a more symbiotic relationship with his fellow-beings.
