Abstract
Since 1990s, among the various trends in Bangladeshi theatre practice, academic theatre productions produced by university-level drama departments have drawn significant attention. It is generally recognized that having received formal institutional training from six public universities and several private institutions in Bangladesh, numerous actors, directors, and designers have been bringing new dimensions to contemporary theatre practice in the country. Their productions prominently feature experimental works that integrate elements of indigenous traditional theatre of Bangladesh and modern techniques of global theatre in many ways. This impact is further validated by national awards and various private accolades. Notably, several actor-directors recognized as academicians have achieved international acclaim and pursued advanced studies in this field.
However, not all individuals who receive an institutional education in drama remain actively involved in theatre practice. As more than four decades have passed since the inception of institutional theatre education in this country, it is now time to analyze and evaluate this practice as one of the nation's primary creative domains. This article provides a data-driven analysis of the achievements, shortcomings, contributions, and challenges faced by these academicians. Additionally, it explores the underlying reasons why many graduates pursue other professions within the broader cultural sphere instead of continuing in theatre. Furthermore, the discussion touches upon the aesthetic conflicts between mainstream theatre practitioners and academicians. Ultimately, this paper contextualizes its central theme around data, contemporary Bangladeshi realities, and professionalism in theatre practice.
